Evaluation

We were asked to create 3 panels of 210mm * 210mm and to be based on the idea of formal elements.

I decided to focus of the idea of Lightning and the shape that is forms when it’s in the sky. I experimented by using different techniques to create the panels; some of the techniques I experimented with were Photograms, Reductive Mono-prints, Negative Space, Clay, String & Charcoal.  The way I chose my theme was that I created a mind map with a lot of different ideas on it and lightning was the one that jumped out at me.

I reason I chose to base my three panels on lightning is because I thought I was the most interesting and I could work with it a lot more. Unfortunately I couldn’t get any of my own photography of lightning is because there wasn’t any storms or lightning happening around the time we started the project.

In panel 1 (Photogram) I used a stencil to create the shape of the lighting. This shows tone because of the different shades of black in it with the lighting strikes and with in the background. I have used line to create the lightning strikes and the only colours I have used are black and grey because lightning only appears at night. I had overcome some challenges to create this panel because to start with had the idea of placing pieces of paper to create the lighting but they came out to block like and I didn’t get the effect that I wanted for the lightning.

In panel 2 (Negative Space) I drew the lighting shape out with pencil then pained the background with black paint, when I have finished painting I rubbed out the pencil to get crisp white lines of the lightning shapes. There is texture in this panel because I used a thick layer of black paint to create it. There isn’t very much tone in this panel because its only just black paint. I didn’t have to overcome very many challenges because it was very easy to create.

Panel 3 (Mono-print) To create this I used oil based paint and rolled it onto a piece of plastic then got a scrap of cardboard and taken out some of the oil paint to create the lightning shapes. There not very much tone or texture but there is shape and line because of the lightning. The overall form of the panel looks realistic. There was all sorts of challenges I had to overcome because I had to make sure that the oil paint wasn’t to wet or dry other wise it would of smudged and the shape wouldn’t of come out how I wanted it to.

All three of the panels have shape, tone, line and form in them. The reason they don’t all have texture is because they are either photograms which is like a photograph and the other two are painted and you couldn’t really get very much texture out of them.
