Tom Hoops

Tom Hoops

The characteristics of this photograph is very fashionable and looks like it would of been used in fashion advert. The photo is very over exposed because its a very white background and also her face is quite bright then you have the contrast with the black / grey eye makeup which leads your eyes straight to hers. As the photo is monochrome it has lots of tone.

The characteristics of this photograph is that the photographer has used Rule of Thirds by having the main subject matter in only one third of the frame. The model also has eye contact with the camera and this engages the audience. By having the jet black background draws your attention straight to the model. There is a lot of tone and you can see the texture in the models face, there is also a prop which is effective.

The characteristics of this photograph and this is a very fashion based photo due to having a dramatic and theatrical makeup which is effective. You can see where the light is shinny on the models face because its bright and over exposed on one side and then gradually fades into a dark black. You have eye contact with the model and the photographer has also used the Rule of Thirds and the model is in the end of the frame.

The characteristics of this photograph is that its a portrait photo and also you have eye contact with the model. The centre of the face has been brightened up and not having the jaw bone in the photo which makes it more effective and also has a fashion/ contemporary feel to it. Also with the jet black background it brings your attention to the centur of the models face.

Julia Margaret Cameron

The characteristics of this photograph is that it was take a long time ago and also because it was a long time ago it has a sepia effect on the photo and how it was developed. There is a lot of tone in this photo because of the development of the photo. You can also see the texture of the photo as well and its quite grainy. I think that its over exposed because its quite a dark photograph.

The characteristics of this photograph is that it has a grey tone to it because of the time it was developed. Its just a simple portrait because it has the whole of the head and also the shoulders. The image has tone and you can see this in the light and dark part mainly on the face. You can see where the light was shinning from because of the brightness on one side of the face and the graduation of darker on the other side.

The characteristics of this photograph is that its in black and white and that's because of the time it was developed. The image is exposed just right because you have a good balance of dark and light in the image. This is a group photo because there are two people in the photo and also its a double portrait because it has both heads and both shoulders in the image. There is also a lot of tone and texture in this photograph.

The characteristics of the photograph is that it has an orange / brown effect on the photo because of the time it was developed. Its also a portrait because you can see the hole of the head and also the shoulders. The centre of the face is quite bright and so is the hair due the to lighting shinning from one side and then it gradually becoming darker. You can see the tone and texture in this photograph.

Charlie Waite

Charlie Waite

The characteristics of this photograph is that it has used leading lines and you can see the tone and texture in the photo due to it being outside. Its monochrome so it has a different and calming feel to it because you don't have a lot of color in your face. By using the technique of leading lines you direct the persons eyes to the main feature of the photo even though it might be small like the gate like this one in the photo.

The characteristics of this photograph is that it has uses leading lines by having the natural sunlight at the end its looks like your looking though a tunnel. You can see in the photo that there is a lot of tone and texture because it set in the woods you can see the texture in the trees and grass on the floor.

The characteristics of this photography is that he has used leading lines and color in this photograph. By having the blocks of purple lavender and the 2 small strips of a brown color makes the purple pop out, also your eyes go straight to the centre of the photo because the brown lines direct your eyes to the middle of the photo where the widest lavender strip is.

The characteristics of this photograph has leading lines just like all the other photographs that Charlie Waite always has in his pictures. By having the pop of blue in the sky makes it stand out from the brown/ beige colors of the rest of the photograph. You can see the texture in the photo due to the trees and the long grain grass at the bottom.

David Bailey

The characteristics of this photography is that its in black and white and is also cropped at the top. The photography is central so that draws your eyes to the person, you also have eye contact to that draws you eyes to the centre. Its also a portrait but I have been cropped into a square. The whole photo is in monochrome and has a good exposure.

The characteristics of this photograph is that is has eye contact with the camera which would get the audience engaged. The photo is also monochrome, its also exposed just right because you have a good balance between the white background and the jet black suit. You can also see a lot of triangles which guide your eyes up to the centre of the photograph. The photo is also cropped and you cant see the top of the head.

The characteristics of this photography is that is done in black and white, there is also some triangles in the photograph which guides your eyes to the models eyes. The photograph is also cropped at the top so you cant see the top of his head and is in a square format. There is eye contact with the model and camera.

The characteristics of this photograph is in black and white but also has 2 people in the photo compared to the others. Both 2 people in the photograph have eye contact with the camera and is exposed just right. The photograph has been cropped in a square with a black border just like the others but it has not cropped the top of the heads because there is 2 people in the photo.

The characteristics of this photograph is that its in black and white and has eye contact with the camera. Due to the photo being taken in black and white you have tone and you can see the texture in the peoples faces. There is a prop in the photograph and its facing down and when you first glance at the photo you will look at the end of the cigarette because its in the centre of the photo. You can also see some triangle in the photo and that draws your eyes to the centre of the photograph.

The characteristics of this photograph is that its in black and white but not like the others it dose not have a black border or has been cropped into a square or had the top of the head cropped off. There is a lot of tone in this photograph because the light is being shine just above the face so the middle of the face has been brighter than the sides. There is eye contact wit the model and camera.

Chip Kidd

Chip Kidd

The characteristics of this piece, the most obvious thing is that its illustrated, you can tell this because it looks hand drawn. He has used tone because of the contrast between black and white, also in this piece there has been negative space used. There isn't any texture used because you can see that its just been scanned into the computer. Also its very cartoon like.

The characteristics of this piece is that its a cartoon drawing, you can tell this by the way it has been draw. He has used primary colors of this piece because they are bright so they can stand out, it also looks like it was drawn a long time ago just by the style of the piece. The lightning bolt has a big effect on the piece because it goes straight thought the main feature of the piece, this is a significant part of the piece. I look like there is a textured background with the clouds by the was they have been done. There is also a black line around the main feature so it can stand out from the light background.

The characteristics of this piece is that its very plain and there is a silhouette of a dinosaur which links in with the piece very well because that was the book that Chip Kidd was doing the cover for. He has only used 3 colors in the whole piece to not over do it. By just having the silhouette of a dinosaur is effective because its only the bones so it doesn't look realistic and this is a fiction book. By having the name of the author in a red makes it stand out and the name of the book in another makes it stand out from the white background and to have a black dinosaur makes it monochrome which is effective. There isn't very much texture but here is line with the silhouette.

The characteristics is bright and colourful even though he only used 3 colors to create this piece. He has also used a clever use of text by making it go large to really small to make it look like its going around in a spiral. By having the word 'LOOP' it makes you think of loops and spirals and he has created a spiral effect with color and pattern. There isn't very much tone but there is line by having the color in lines and then spiralling it.

Kate Moross

Kate Moross

The characteristics of this piece is that its very colourful and she has used a lot of different shapes to create this busy look. There is a lot of contrasting colors in this piece by using bright and also primary colors placed on a black background. Lines have been used a lot in this piece e.g.  to create the sea like feel at the bottom of the piece.

The characteristics of this piece is again very colourful but this time it have more words that link to a different subject. The words are brighter and clearer because they are on a cream background. With there being little doodle like drawing in little sections of the piece it makes it look like it has texture by them being black lines and they look hand drawn. I like this piece because its bright and colourful and all the words are done in the same type of style so it doesn't look all jumbled up.

The characteristics of this piece are very colourful and uses a lot of pastel colors in the background. She has used line in this piece quite a lot and its very sketch book like with the hand drawn looking elements in it. By copy and pasting the photo onto the image it makes it looked textured because its a photo of an actual person. The contrast with the bright background and the black and white photography is very effective in this piece as it drags your attention straight to the face of the girl.

The characteristics of this piece is very colourful again and the contrast of the black and white with the bright pinks, purples and yellows are very effective. Her work looks hand drawn then scanned in to the computer. It gives the piece texture by having the black and white lines in the background so I looks vey busy on the page but then having the trainers dead centre balances out everything.

The characteristics of this piece is very photographic and then the photoshoping of the colourful swirls onto him. I gives the piece texture when she added the blue hair because she made sure that you can still see each individual hair with black lines. The piece looks very much like 'POP ART' because of having the thick black line around the photograph and also the collar bone.
I think that almost all of Kate Moross's work is vey similar because of the bright colors contrasting with black lines and white background.

Saul Bass

Saul Bass

The characteristics of this work is that it only uses 3 colors- black, white and orange, the picture is flat and doesn't seem to have any texture to it at all. A lot of shape has been used it this picture. Saul Bass has used blocks of color to create the shapes of the hat, glasses, letters and ties. Sail Bass has also used tone in his work because of the contrast between the black and orange and also white and black.
Its good because you can clearly see what the picture is telling you and also it has the title clearly in the centre of the picture.

The characteristics of this work is that its only used 2 colors- black and yellow. The image doesn't look like it has very much texture except in the work 'THE' because of the face created using dots. There is tone because of the contrast with the bright yellow and the black lettering. There is shape because of the font type of the title and also in the words at the top and bottom. Its good because you can clearly see what its about but it doesn't give you a visual representation of it.

The characteristics of this picture is that he has only used 3 colors - red, black and white. in this picture there is line used to create the twister shape and also for the text. The picture looks like it has texture because of the word 'TWISTER'. There is tone created by having the contrast of black and white next to each other and the all red background. Its good because you can clearly see what its about and also it have a good visual representation of what its about.

The characteristics of this picture is that it has a good sense of tone and contrast because of the bright yellow and the black writing a silhouette's. It doesn't look like it has much texture and looks quite flat. He has used only 3 colors as usual. There is a good use of shape in this picture because of the jagged shape going through the picture, and by having that white it makes it stand out from the rest of the picture and also its central so it catches you attention. Its good because by having the color yellow it links in the feeling of summer.

The characteristics of this picture is that it has a good use of shape because of the flames like tyre marks on the bottom of the picture and also the arrows in the centre of the picture with the title of the picture. He has used 4 different colors and its the only one with 4 colors than 3 colors or less. Its good and effective because of the arrows used, its a visual representation of what its about and also the flamed tyre marks.

The characteristics of this picture is that it has a good use of shape because of the steps incorporated into the title. It looks like it has texture because of the was the title has been done. There is also repetition in the silhouettes one black and one white and this is also a visual representation of that its about. Its good because its layout  is done well by having the title right in the centre of the picture.

All the pieces link because they  all use at least 3 colors in each work and also interpretations of movie covers.

Jo Peel Response

Jo Peel Response

To create my response to Jo Peel, i  started off with the rays by using the pen tool to create the shape then filled them in with a color of our choice.
We then took pictures from the internet and placed them into illustrator and traced the image, after the image has been traced we clicked on advanced image trace and then ignore white.
To create our image we took inspiration from Joe Peel's work and created something like it. We had to chose our images carefully so we had a construction site type of feel to the work like Jo Peels is like.

Jo Peel uses a strong uses of line and her work is monotone. she also has a fascination of our ever changing cities.

Candy Skull

Candy Skull

To create my candy skull, i firstly drew half of the skull from different pictures that we found on our Pintrest board. After we had finished drawing half of our skull we scaned it in the Macs and uploaded up on to Photoshop. We then transfered it on to Illistrator to add the color and to make the lines thicker. When we had finished the color we mirrored the picture to create a full skull. We mirrored it so if we drew both sides we have a chance of not getting it exactly symetrical.

Magazine Cover

Magazine Cover

To start with I chose a piece of photography that I have taken and put I through photoshop the change the color to black and white. I stretched the picture over the whole section and made it the back layer. The font of the title is Helveia in a bring red so it stands out from the black and white background. All the other text is in Kefa either in bold or regular. The reason I chose to use those fonts is because when I did my research they were the most common types and also its contemporary.
I have done some research before creating my magazine cover by creating a Pintrest board and I have taken some inspiration from the different covers that I saw and moulded them together to create mine.

NME Magazine Cover

NME Magazine Cover

To create this i used the rectangle tool and eclipse tool. I filled the shaped to mimic the shapes on the original magazine cover.

To create this one i used the text tool and tried to find the exact font type of the lettering and also the color of the text.

Evaluation (Mock)

Evaluation

We were asked to create 3 panels of 210mm * 210mm and to be based on the idea of formal elements.
I decided to focus of the idea of Lightning and the shape that is forms when it’s in the sky. I experimented by using different techniques to create the panels; some of the techniques I experimented with were Photograms, Reductive Mono-prints, Negative Space, Clay, String & Charcoal.  The way I chose my theme was that I created a mind map with a lot of different ideas on it and lightning was the one that jumped out at me.

I reason I chose to base my three panels on lightning is because I thought I was the most interesting and I could work with it a lot more. Unfortunately I couldn’t get any of my own photography of lightning is because there wasn’t any storms or lightning happening around the time we started the project.

In panel 1 (Photogram) I used a stencil to create the shape of the lighting. This shows tone because of the different shades of black in it with the lighting strikes and with in the background. I have used line to create the lightning strikes and the only colours I have used are black and grey because lightning only appears at night. I had overcome some challenges to create this panel because to start with had the idea of placing pieces of paper to create the lighting but they came out to block like and I didn’t get the effect that I wanted for the lightning.

In panel 2 (Negative Space) I drew the lighting shape out with pencil then pained the background with black paint, when I have finished painting I rubbed out the pencil to get crisp white lines of the lightning shapes. There is texture in this panel because I used a thick layer of black paint to create it. There isn’t very much tone in this panel because its only just black paint. I didn’t have to overcome very many challenges because it was very easy to create.

Panel 3 (Mono-print) To create this I used oil based paint and rolled it onto a piece of plastic then got a scrap of cardboard and taken out some of the oil paint to create the lightning shapes. There not very much tone or texture but there is shape and line because of the lightning. The overall form of the panel looks realistic. There was all sorts of challenges I had to overcome because I had to make sure that the oil paint wasn’t to wet or dry other wise it would of smudged and the shape wouldn’t of come out how I wanted it to.

All three of the panels have shape, tone, line and form in them. The reason they don’t all have texture is because they are either photograms which is like a photograph and the other two are painted and you couldn’t really get very much texture out of them.

Rule of Thirds, Leading Lines and Depth of Field

Rule of Thirds

The rule of thirds is a "rule of thumb" or guideline which applies to the process of composing visual images such as designs, films, painting, and photographers. The guideline proposes that an image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines, and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections.
The rule of thirds is applied by aligning a subject with the guide lines and their intersection points, placing the horizon on the top or bottom line, or allowing linear features in the image to flow from section to section. The main reason for observing the rule of thirds is to discourage placement of the subject at the center, or prevent a horizon from appearing to divide the picture in half.

Leading Lines

Leading line paves an easy path for the eye to follow through different elements of a photo. Usually they start at the bottom of the frame and guide the eye upwards and inwards, from the foreground of the image to the background, typically leading toward the main subject.
The easiest place to find a leading line is on a road. Roadways are inherently leading because they go somewhere, give us a feeling of motion, and the lines often point so far inwards that they reach a vanishing point – the place where two or more lines converge into theoretical infinity.
When leading lines, such as roads, connect the foreground to the background of a scene, they help to create depth and dimensionality which draws the viewer into the image.

Depth Of Field

In optics, particularly as it relates to film and photography, depth of field (DOF) is the distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a scene that appear acceptably sharp in an image. Although a lens can precisely focus at only one distance at a time, the decrease in sharpness is gradual on each side of the focused distance, so that within the DOF, the unsharpness is imperceptible under normal viewing conditions.
In some cases, it may be desirable to have the entire image sharp, and a large DOF is appropriate. In other cases, a small DOF may be more effective, emphasizing the subject while de-emphasizing the foreground and background. In cinematography, a large DOF is often called deep focus, and a small DOF is often called shallow focus.
