Photography - Evaluation

I was invited by the Guardian newspaper to submit a range of images that explore youth culture in some aspect.  The purpose of the brief was to submit 9 professional quality photographs (3 must be in the studio) that explore Youth Culture. Also a copy of the contact sheets, at least 100 images in total.

My idea originally was to have images of my sister Hannah and her boyfriend Nick to model for me up against a brick wall, I chose them because they both have tattoos so I was trying to communicate the feel of Punk/ Rock feel to them. I did bout 2-3 photo-shoots with them to get it just right.  I struggled working with limited light and a lot of the images were blurry and out of focus.  However, I learned a lot and enjoyed the challenge of trying to get it right.

When it came to the studio photos Hannah and Nick couldn't make it into college so I decided to use Harry and Lola for them.  This worked out well as I wanted to expand the people I was looking at.  The photographs were successful and When it came to editing the photos I decided to use all photos of Harry & Lola because they both portray the theme better. When editing them on Photoshop I changed the levels, brightness then changed the image into black and white to give it a soft punk/rock feel to the images. I did try all the editing with Hannah & Nick but they didn't look right because the camera that I was using wasn't a DSLR so the images didn't come out sharp enough.

I feel that the final 9 images were successful because they show what I want it to and also they are better quality. I have used all studio photos but I have experimented with ones on location.

Annie Leibovitz

This artist links with my work because she specialises in studio and black and white photos. I think that she helped because she inspired me to make my photos black and white to give it more of an effect on the audience. Also all my photos being in the studio makes them more professional just like Annie Leibovitz's.
I like her work because its very simple and effective by having the model looking straight down the camera just like my models are doing.
